Onze Lieve Vrouwentoren
The Lievevrouwetoren is a Gothic tower that stands proudly in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. It's lined with chairs, tables and parasols tumbling out of cafes and restaurants facing the tower in a semi-circle. They curve around almost like an audience waiting in anticipation of an untold story. Which is pretty poetic as the tower has a fair few stories to tell...
"The Miracle of Amersfoort" story from 1444 is a legend of visions, maidens, lost statues and following pilgrims... There's the history of the gunpowder fuelled explosion that scattered what was a church to rubble, leaving behind just the tower. My personal favourite story tells of how the tower stands at the heart and central point of The Netherlands -for the Dutch national grid (Rijksdriehoekscoördinaten). If you wonder inside you'll find a bright red beam of light pointing down from the towers peak. It shines down through a scuffed and well-trodden window in the ground where you can almost see it pointing to a central point on a map of The Netherlands.
In my drawing, the trees and wee wobbly buildings surrounding the tower lean gently towards the tower, as if they're listening to a secret story coming straight from the bricks.Production & Shipping: This Gicleé print is currently for sale via Etsy.
